With a roster spot open, the Sox then called up outfielder Alejandro De Aza. He had an immediate impact with the Sox. In his first at bat of the season, De Aza hit a two-run homerun as the White Sox defeated the Tigers 2-1. John Danks struck out 10 in picking up his 4th win of the season and Santos got his 21st save. With the win, the Sox moved to 51-52, 1 1/2 games behind the Cleveland Indians and just 3 1/2 behind the Tigers. The Sox now get a day off in preparation for their big weekend series against the A.L. East leading Boston Red Sox. Gavin Floyd (8-9) will face Tim Wakefield (6-3).
Putouts: The Tigers ranked 13th in total putouts with 4,333. The sale jerseys were ahead of the Tigers with 4,339 and the Yankees were behind the Tigers with 4,327. The top teams in putouts were the Giants (4,383), Red Sox, Phillies and Padres were tied, Rangers, Cardinals and Rays were tied, Mets and Reds were tied, Twins, Angels, sale jerseys and Tigers. The team with the least number of putouts was the Pittsburgh Pirates with 4,235.
The leniency of punishment in baseball has made me think. Not to make a pun, but baseball is a cerebral game. A good manager in my eyes must be a good chess player. His job is to place his men strategically and move them wherever he projects the adversarial team will be looking for an edge. He sometimes even has to think two and three moves ahead.
He pitched into the sixth inning, giving up four total runs (two unearned). By the time he left the game, Texas led 4-3, but the Cardinals scored in the inning to tie the game. Texas took the lead in the top of the seventh but eventually lost the game in the 11th.
If they continue to develop, the team will have outfield depth with Hawkins and also Trayce Thompson and #Jared Mitchell. Mitchell may be the best athlete in the organization. He was a two sport star in college, can run, hit, and play good defense. Another name to keep an eye out for is first baseman Keon Barnum. He is another left hand hitter with good power. But is it enough to turn around the franchise?
Cleveland and Chicago had an odd year against each other. The Tribe won five of the first six while the White Sox won five of the last six. In between, the Indians and White Sox split six games for a 9-9 season series.
In the 11th, Kelvin Herrera (2-3, 5.02 ERA) gave up a solo home run to Jordan Danks, the second HR of Danks’ career. Closer Addison Reed (2.40 ERA) retired the side to earn his 11th save.
